Dine with Nine Groups                                                engage One Another

Fun, Food, and Fellowship for Everyone!

“Dine with Nine” is a fun and meaningful way to deepen relationships and the sense of community.  Whether you are single or coupled, young or old, live in a big house or a small apartment, are a good cook or not… you can be a part of a Dine with Nine group!

How the program works
In January of each new year there is an open invitation to participate in a Dine with Nine group. Those who are interested register on a Dine with Nine list.  Toward the end of the month, a coordinating team looks over the lists and divides everyone into a Dine with Nine group with roughly the same number of persons, usually somewhere between 7 and 9 persons.  As much as possible, people who have already been in a Dine with Nine group are grouped with different persons so new friends can be made! Once formed, the groups meet through the year for food, fun and fellowship.

The program is very flexible and each group can decide what works best for them.  Many groups meet once a month for a meal.  Some groups meet less often. Often the meal is a potluck dinner, but it can also be a breakfast, lunch or dessert.  If someone’s home is too small to accommodate their group, they may decide to host by partnering with another member with a larger home, or to host a picnic in a park or in their backyard during the warm season.  There are a lot of possibilities!

In December, all the members of all the Dine with Nine groups are invited to the annual Dine with Nine gathering with good food, a fun program, and the chance to hear what all the groups have been up to in the past year.

What happens in the groups?
The main agenda for Dine with Nine groups is to enjoy some good food and to deepen friendships.  Mostly it’s simply a matter of having lively conversation, but some groups have been known to enjoy games, also!

This year, Dine with Nine groups are encouraged to add these new features to their gatherings…
  • SharePoint – Each month of 2012 there will be a “SharePoint” question developed and passed on to Dine with Nine groups so that all of the groups may respond to the same SharePoint question each month.  How the group decides to use the SharePoint will be up to them, but the expectation is that sometime during the gathering the SharePoint question will be read and everyone in the group will be invited to share a story, experience or insight in response.
  • For Others project – Each group is encouraged to choose a For Others project for the year.  What it will be is totally up to the group, but the project is aimed at someone in need outside the group.  The project can be as simple or as involved as the group wants it to be.
  • Adopt a Homebound person – Each group is also encouraged this year to adopt a homebound person.  The homebound person may not be able to actually join the group for a meal, but there are many ways the group can reach out to the homebound person to let him/her know that someone cares about them.

BUT IT’S NOT JANUARY!  HOW CAN I JOIN A DINE WITH NINE GROUP?

You may just be learning about Dine with Nine and it’s mid year.  You can still join a group if you want to by contacting the Church Office (541)-672-1629 or clicking here: admin@fumcroseburg.org

Dine with Nine "Out"
There is yet another option for people who enjoy getting together with other folks.  It’s the Dine with Nine Out group that meets once a month at a restaurant chosen for the occasion.  Anyone can come to a Dine with Nine Out gathering, even if you are a member of another Dine with Nine group and you can take it an event at a time.

These gatherings are less intimate than the Dine with Nine “In” groups.  People still have a good time visiting with one another, but because it’s a larger group in a public setting, the chances are there will be many table conversations going on at the same time rather than one focused conversation.

The Dine with Nine Out group will be challenged to do a For Others project and adopt a homebound person.  They are also included in the annual event held at the church in December.

Everyone participating in the Dine with Nine Out group is responsible for their own expenses related to the meal.

Be sure to contact the church office or Dine with Nine coordinator if you have any questions and watch the church calendar for Dine with Nine Out gatherings throughout the year.
