Continuing with Jesus' Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5, I suggested that Jesus' attention is aimed directly at his disciples when the pronouns change in verse 11 from "those" and "they" to "you." "You are the salt of the earth." "You are the light of the world." I talked about the qualities of salt and light and their symbolic significance back in Jesus' day.
So, what does it mean for us today to be the "salt of the earth" and the "light of the world?" Like the salt on our table, Jesus sprinkles his disciples in settings all round and expects them to "season" it somehow. Like the lamps about our house, we are to spread some light in dark places and reveal what's really there - perhaps in situations where things have gone on unawares or secretly and need to be brought to light.
Ever find yourself in situations like this in your daily living? How have you been salt or light?
